U SPORTS has announced the eight finalists for its top individual honours and there is no shortage of talent among the nominees for the 25th annual BLG Awards.
A group of veteran female athletes are in the running for the Jim Thompson trophy as the nation’s top female athlete.
Sarah Bujold of St. Francis Xavier University led the country in scoring and is the first female hockey player in her school’s history to be nominated.
Fourth-year students Arielle Roy-Petitclerc of Laval University and Claire Sumner of Queens were also nominated. Roy-Petitclerc was a force on the soccer pitch, scoring 10 goals in 14 games while Sumner took home three cross country titles this season.
University of British Columbia’s Danielle Brisebois led her volleyball team to a national championship in her fifth year and extended a long streak of Thunderbirds cracking this list.
Four men have a chance to take home the Doug Mitchell Trophy, including Philippe Maillet, who earned Championship MVP honours as the University of New Brunswick won the ice hockey national title this year.
Last year’s U SPORTS Rookie of the Year Mathieu Betts also earned a nomination by recording nine sacks in eight league games on route to Laval’s Vanier Cup win.
Rounding out the group are Trinity Western volleyball star Ryan Sclater and York University soccer player Jonathan Lao, who both enjoyed success with their school’s deep playoff runs.
