The Portland Winterhawks are going to try to get Mason West to play in the WHL.
The Winterhawks acquired the WHL playing rights of the 2025 Chicago Blackhawks first-round pick in a trade with the Vancouver Giants on Tuesday, the team announced.
The Giants get a conditional 2028 WHL Draft first-round pick (if West reports to Portland and a 2030 seventh-round pick.
The six-foot-six forward is verbally committed to play NCAA hockey for Michigan State this year.
West, picked 29th overall by the Blackhawks, finished his high-school football season in Minnesota as a quarterback for the Edina Hornets last season before focusing on hockey. He led the Hornets to their first state championship since 1978.
West then had 10 goals and 15 assists in 38 games for the Fargo Force of the USHL.
