NEW YORK – Troy Tulowitzki is hopeful the right quad tightness that struck him late in Tuesday night’s 6-0 loss to the New York Yankees won’t keep him out of the Toronto Blue Jays lineup Wednesday.
The all-star shortstop felt a grab in his upper leg while stealing second base in the seventh inning. He finished out the frame but didn’t come out for the bottom of the inning, opting for caution.
"I felt like I needed to get out of there otherwise I could have done something I didn’t want to do and put myself in jeopardy," Tulowitzki said. "That was my decision and hopefully I’m good to go tomorrow. We’ll see how sore it is."
The Blue Jays will have their fingers crossed that it’s nothing serious, as Tulowitzki has been steadily getting himself untracked of late, batting .313 (15-for-48) over his last 13 games, including a 1-for-2 with a walk Tuesday.
He didn’t get a single ball in the field against the Yankees before walking to open the seventh and opportunistically swiping his first bag of the season.
"I hadn’t been moving around too much out there in the game and to get on it, trying to steal a base, it just grabbed me," said Tulowitzki. "Nothing more than that. …
"I already started some treatment. Wake up, tell them how it feels, and see if I can go or not."
Ryan Goins finished the game at shortstop, with Russell Martin playing second base after Justin Smoak had hit for Darwin Barney.
