SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Nova Scotia’s Colleen Pinkney defeated Alberta’s Deb Santos 10-4 to move atop the standings at the Canadian senior women’s curling championship Monday.
Pinkney is alone at 5-0 followed by Manitoba’s Lois Fowler, who had the evening bye, in second at 4-0.
New Brunswick’s Heidi Hanlon held off Laura Phillips of St. John’s, N.L. for an 8-6 win. Both teams are 3-2 along with Quebec’s Catherine Derick, who lost 11-4 to Ontario’s Judy Oryniak (1-4).
On the men’s side, Robbie Maclean’s Quebec rink won their third in a row and improved to 3-2 with a 7-6 victory over B.C.’s Craig Lepine (2-3).
New Brunswick’s Wayne Tallon and Ontario’s Howard Rajala were both off Monday evening and lead the men’s section at 4-0
Manitoba and Saskatchewan met in a prairie match-up. Regina’s Gord Bell won 8-7 over Manitoba’s Bob Sigurdson (3-2) and improved to 2-3.
Local skip Rod MacDonald closed out Northern Ontario’s Bruce Munro 10-3 and is part of a three-way tie for third at 3-2. Northern Ontario is winless.
The tournament runs for both sides through March 24, with the winners representing Canada at the 2014 world senior curling championships.
