Kiril Kabanov and the Shawinigan Cataractes weren’t sitting on any lead Thursday night at the MasterCard Memorial Cup.

In the tiebreaker game, Shawinigan faced the Edmonton Oil Kings, a team that had edged them in round robin 4-3 last Friday.

The hometown Cataractes didn’t want an early exit in the tournament and burst onto the score sheet.

They held a 3-0 in the second period when Kabanov shook off Oil Kings forward Rhett Rachinski and fired the puck, which ricocheted off of the glass and hit Oil Kings goaltender Laurent Brossoit to go into the net. The crowd erupted and the goal light came on but Brossoit quickly knocked the puck out of the net before the referee could see it.

Watch as the Cataractes pounce on the attack and Brandon Gormley makes sure it counts by firing the puck home.

Kabanov was credited with the goal as replays showed it was in the net all along.

Shawinigan continued the assault, winning 6-1 and advancing to semifinal where they will face the Saint John Sea Dogs on Friday.
