3 things we learned in the NHL: Athanasiou ties OT scoring record

Andreas Athanasiou’s OT goal helped the Detroit Red Wings edge the Ottawa Senators 2-1 in OT.

NHL records were tied, the Sens continued a rough trend and the league made an All-Star Game announcement.

Here are three things we learned in the NHL on Wednesday.

Athanasiou ties history with winner
Andreas Athanasiou wasted little time to end Detroit’s game against the Senators.

The Red Wings forward scored his second goal of the game just six seconds into overtime as Detroit edged Ottawa 2-1. The goal was so quick that it tied for the fasted overtime goal in NHL history.

Looking bad on the goal was Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson, who coughed up the puck at his blue line, leading Athanasiou to score the winner. Ottawa’s captain finished with a minus-2 rating.

Sens’ trend of giving up first goal continues

The Ottawa Senators have played 38 games this season and 21 times they’ve give up the first goal. It’s not a track record worth bragging about.

Ottawa did it again against the Detroit Red Wings, with Athanasiou capitalizing on some rough defence by the Sens to put his team up 1-0.

The Sens fell to 3-13-5 when allowing the first goal this season.

All-Star Game captains announced
With the NHL All-Star Weekend just a few weeks away, the league announced its captain for the event’s marquee game.

Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals (Metropolitan Division), Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers (Pacific Division), P.K. Subban of the Nashville Predators (Central Division), and Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning (Atlantic Division) will each captain their respective teams.

The Lightning are hosting the All-Star Game from Jan. 27 to 28, which will feature a skills competition and three-on-three tournament.

The jerseys were some unconventional colours as well. What do you think?
