The Washington Capitals claimed forward Aaron Volpatti off waivers from the Vancouver Canucks Thursday.
Volpatti has one goal and 28 penalty minutes in 16 games with the Canucks this season.
The 27-year-old Revelstoke, B.C., native has three goals, one assist in 54 career NHL games, all spent with the Canucks. Volpatti first entered the NHL after signing with the Canucks as an undrafted free agent in March 2010.
The six-foot, 215-pounder played four seasons at Brown University in the NCAA and was named to the ECAC All-Academic team in his first three seasons there In his fourth year at the school he was named team captain.
Volpatti told News 1130 Sports Thursday that he was surprised he was picked up by the Capitals.
