Canada’s Denis Shapovalov was eliminated from the Mubadala City DC Open on Friday after he was defaulted from his quarterfinal match against Ben Shelton.

Shapovalov lost the first set 6-7 (5) and was down 3-6 in another tiebreak during the second set when he appeared to throw his racket to the court and shouted at a spectator in the stands.

As Shelton prepared to serve for triple match point, Shapovalov continued to argue with the fan and was handed a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct from the umpire, who also called over a supervisor.

The players shook hands as boos rained from the stands.

It was Shapovalov’s first quarterfinal since January 2023.
