Kinley Rasmus had no problem shining in the spotlight on the opening day of the Little League World Series.
Rasmus, the niece of former Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Colby Rasmus and the daughter of ex-MLB pitcher Cory Rasmus, threw six shutout innings for her Alabama team in a 2-0 extra-inning loss to a squad from Tacoma, Wash in South Williamsport, Pa.
Rasmus is one of the marquee players in the annual showcase for players aged 10 to 12.
She allowed just one hit while walking two and striking out eight. Kinley's cousin, Ryker Rasmus, allowed the two runs in the seventh inning (regulation games are six innings).
Kinley Rasmus is the 25th female to play in the Little League World Series in the 79-year history of the event, per ESPN. She also is the ninth female pitcher.
Colby and Cory Rasmus were stars on the last Phenix City, Ala. squad to make the Little League World Series in 1999.
Kinley Rasmus didn't allow a run in nine innings across three games at the regional qualifier for the Little League World Series. She also chipped in offensively with two RBIs and four walks.
Colby Rasmus was acquired by the Blue Jays in a 2011 mid-season trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. He remained with the team through the 2014 season.
