Blue Jays’ Vlad Jr. uses Old Town Road as first walk-up song

Watch as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. gets a standing ovation in his first MLB at bat.

He’s gonna take his bat to the old SkyDome, he’s gonna mash ’til he can’t no more.

If you hadn’t yet heard, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made his official Toronto Blue Jays debut at Rogers Centre against the Oakland Athletics on Friday night and the top prospect in baseball decided to use the top song on the pop charts as his first walk-up tune.

The 20-year-old son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero walked up to the plate during the second inning for his first at-bat as “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus played in the background.

“Old Town Road” has been in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for a few weeks and, not that Guerrero needed to pander to home crowd, it certainly endeared him to the younger members of the fan base as you can see below.

Guerrero ended up grounding out but received a standing ovation nonetheless.

Guerrero, who started at third base for the Blue Jays and hit fifth in the lineup, gave early onlookers plenty to cheer about before the game as well.

Anticipation for Guerrero’s major-league debut has been building for a couple years now – not only in Toronto – and his father, a Montreal Expos legend, was in the building to watch his son’s debut.
