Edin beats Jacobs at GSOC Syncrude National

Olympic gold medallist Brad Jacobs fell 8-4 in seven ends to Niklas Edin during Draw 4 action at the Syncrude National Grand Slam of Curling tournament in Fort McMurray, Alta.

Edin, the reigning world champion, trailed 3-2 after four but scored a three-ender in the fifth to pull ahead and the two rinks shook hands after Edin added another score of three in the seventh.

Jacobs held the hammer in the opening end but gave up a steal of one. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., team scored a deuce in the second and singles in the fourth and sixth ends.

Both teams now hold 1-1 records in the tournament.

Elsewhere, Switzerland’s Sven Michel improved to 3-0 with an 11-9 victory over Glenn Howard, from Penetanguishene, Ont. Howard (2-1) scored four in the seventh end to grab a 9-7 lead before Michel rallied back with a four-ender of his own in the final end to win it.

Sweden’s Oskar Eriksson is now 2-0 in the tournament with a huge 8-2 win in six ends over Regina’s Brock Virtue. Eriksson scored a three-ender in the third and pulled away with a steal of three in the fourth. Virtue dropped to a 0-2 record.

Calgary’s Kevin Koe (2-1) earned a 5-3 win in seven ends against Toronto’s Travis Fanset (0-3).

Brad Gushue’s match against Soo-Hyuk Kim has been postponed to Saturday at 11 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. MT.
