Flaxey tops Romain in Ontario Scotties Draw 2

Allison Flaxey is the defending champion at the Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts (Anil Mungal).

Defending champion Allison Flaxey bounced back from an opening night loss to beat Caitlin Romain 7-4 during Draw 2 action Tuesday afternoon at the Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Penetaguishene, Ont.

Flaxey, from Listowel, scored pairs of points in the second and fourth ends and stole one in five to lead 5-1. Romain replied with a deuce in six and held Flaxey to a single in seven but gave up another steal in eight.

Romain (0-2) settled for one in nine and Flaxey made the double takeout with her first shot in the 10th to run the Waterloo team out of rocks.

Flaxey (1-1) fell to Ottawa’s Rhonda Varnes 10-7 Monday night after Varnes rallied to score two in the ninth and steal four in the final end.

Varnes (2-0) swiped another victory in Draw 2 winning 6-5 after Danielle Inglis of Ottawa (1-1) came up light on her final shot while facing two in the 10th end.

Thornhill’s Julie Hastings climbed to a 2-0 record with a 12-1 victory in six ends against Waterloo’s Shannon Kee (0-2). Hastings opened with a deuce in the first and stole pairs of points in two and three for an early 6-0 lead. Kee grabbed a single in four to get on the board but Hastings continued to pile on the points with another deuce in five followed by a steal of four in six that led to early handshakes.

Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater is also up 2-0 in the tournament after winning 9-2 over Mississauga’s Clancy Grandy (0-2). Middaugh led 3-2 after six ends but scored three in seven and stole a trio of points in eight to ice the game.

Brantford’s Jacqueline Harrison (2-0) earned a 7-3 win over Mississauga’s Megan Balsdon (0-2).
