Brad Gushue jumped to 3-0 at the Syncrude National Grand Slam of Curling with a 10-5 victory in seven ends against Regina’s Brock Virtue in Fort McMurray, Alta.
Gushue, from St. John’s, N.L., led 6-5 with the hammer in the seventh and scored four after Virtue missed on his final shot.
Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen is also undefeated following a 6-5 win over Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock. McEwen (4-0) held the hammer in the final end and made no mistake scoring a single for the victory.
Olympic gold medallist Brad Jacobs improved to a 2-2 record with a 5-2 win in seven ends over Soo-Hyuk Kim from South Korea. The two rinks shook hands after Jacobs, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., scored a deuce in the seventh.
Switzerland’s Sven Michel now holds a 4-0 record after defeating compatriot Pascal Hess 6-1 in six ends. Michel pulled away with a deuce in the first followed by single steals in three consecutive ends.
Halifax’s Mark Dacey (2-2) edged Travis Fanset of Toronto 7-6.
