Rumfeldt doubles up on Kean at Ontario Tankard

Rob Rumfeldt nabbed his second win of the day with a 10-5 victory over Mark Kean at the Ontario Tankard Wednesday (Anil Mungal).

Rob Rumfeldt earned his second victory of the day after cooling down Mark Kean 10-5 during Draw 6 action Wednesday afternoon at the Recharge with Milk Ontario Tankard in Dorchester, Ont.

The Guelph rink climbed to .500 in the round-robin stage with a 3-3 record while handing Team Kean (4-1) their first defeat.

Rumfeldt pulled away 7-1 with a deuce in the first, a four-ender in three and a steal of one in the fourth. Kean recovered with a pair in five and stole one in six to narrow the gap 7-4. The teams traded singles through the seventh and eighth ends and Rumfeldt added another two points in nine to close out the game.

Elsewhere, Aaron Squires and his Kitchener-Waterloo team picked up two points in the extra end to hold off Jon St. Denis’s rink from Listowel 8-6.

Squires (2-3) gave up a steal of two in the second but the Wilfrid Laurier University skip recovered with a deuce in the third and a steal of one in the fourth to go up 3-2.

The two rinks battled back and forth trading singles through five and six and again in seven in eight with Squires staying ahead 5-4. St. Denis (1-5) flashed on his final rock in nine and gave Squires a two-point lead with a steal but bounced right back in the 10th to score two and force the extra end.

Squires sat first and second shot in the 11th and didn’t need to throw his final stone as St. Denis’s angle raise attempt with his last rock came up light.

Greg Balsdon stole points in four consecutive ends as the defending champion shut out Peter Corner 7-0. The Hamilton rink (4-1) swiped two in the third, singles in four and five, and three in the sixth. Corner shook hands early as his Toronto team fell to a 3-3 record.

John Epping (4-1) stole a point in the extra end to swipe an 8-7 win from Colin Dow of Ottawa. Dow (3-3) trailed 5-0 after two ends but cut the deficit to one with a deuce in three and single steals in four and five. After Epping settled for one in six, Dow tied the game with a pair of points in seven and grabbed a 7-6 lead stealing one in the ninth. Team Epping, from Toronto, took a point in the 10th to send the game into the extra frame.

Joe Frans of St. Thomas evened his record to 3-3 with an 8-5 victory over Ottawa’s Ian MacAulay (3-2). Frans trailed 4-2 at the fifth-end break but took control of the game with a four-ender in the sixth, held MacAulay to one in seven, and added single points in eight and nine.
