Ex-Bombers coach to take anger management

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers coach Mike Kelly will avoid facing simple assault and harassment charges if he attends anger management treatment and stays away from the alleged victim, a court ruled Thursday.

"We would propose a cooling-off period for three months," said Assistant District Attorney Wallis Brooks, captain of the DA’s Domestic Abuse Unit, according to the Times Herald newspaper.

"(The woman) is not to be contacted, she’s to be left alone."

Kelly is also prohibited from even "indirect contact" through the woman’s family or friends for the 90-day period, District Judge James P. Gallagher said.

"At that time, charges could be dismissed," the judge said at a hearing Thursday.

Kelly, 51, was fired by the Bombers following his arrest at his Bridgeport home in December.

According to court papers, Bridgeport police Sgt. John Cane went to Kelly’s home around 11 a.m. on Dec. 17 and met a woman whose neck was red, lip swollen and knuckle bleeding.

She accused Kelly of injuring her during "a heated argument that turned physical." Kelly said he grabbed the woman only after she hit him.

Kelly was represented by a lawyer Thursday. A lawyer for the woman was also in court.

No travel restrictions were imposed on Kelly, who lives in Canada part of the year, said the Times Herald, which covers Norristown and Montgomery County in Pennsylvania.

Earlier this week, the Bombers confirmed the CFL club had reached an agreement with Kelly following his firing.

Kelly had two years left on his contract when he was canned.

The team posted a 7-11 record last season under Kelly, whose tenure as head coach was rife with controversy.
