Leafs cut 24 from training camp roster, Dzierkals sent to Marlies

Sportsnet’s Shawn McKenzie was in Niagara Falls to speak with Morgan Rielly, Mike Babcock and Ron Hainsey about the Toronto Maple Leafs top defensive pairing.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have cut 24 players from their training camp roster, with 49 players remaining with the club.

First-round pick Timothy Liljegren was the only player from Toronto’s 2017 draft class to survive the first round of cuts, with defenceman Eemeli Rasanen (59th overall), goaltender Ian Scott (110th overall), defenceman Fedor Gordeev (141st overall), and forward Ryan McGregor (172nd overall) being sent to their respective major junior clubs.

Other players, like 2015 third-round pick Martins Dzierkals and Nikita Korostelev – who earned an invite to camp after being unsigned by the Leafs, who drafted him in the seventh round of 2015 – were sent to AHL camp with the Toronto Marlies.
