The Marjory Stoneman Douglas hockey team has already won the state championship, and Monday they got to hoist one of the most coveted trophies in sports — the Stanley Cup.
The team was practicing at the BB&T Center — home of the NHL’s Florida Panthers — in preparation for its trip to nationals. The NHL and Panthers surprised the high school students with the chance to lift the Stanley Cup.

A mass shooting occurred at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas campus on Feb. 14, leaving 17 dead and many more injured. Numerous students have since become leading voices in the United States’ gun control debate.
Philadelphia Flyers defenceman and Stoneman Douglas alum Shayne Gostisbehere hosted the team for Sunday’s Flyers-Panthers game, signing autographs and taking pictures post-game.
