The New York Rangers have taken Finnish winger Kaapo Kakko with the second-overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.
A six-foot-two, 192-pound, physical specimen, Kakko burst onto the scene as a real potential threat for one of the first two picks after helping lead Finland to a 2019 World Junior Hockey Championship gold with a five-point tournament.
The 18-year-old then followed up that strong international showing with a team-leading six-goal performance as part of Finland’s senior team’s gold-medal run at the 2019 World Championship in May.
Before his arrival in the NHL, Kakko played in the Finnish Elite League where he had 22 goals and 38 points in 45 games played with Turun Palloseura this past season.
