Mike Fisher will serve as one of Ottawa’s alternate captains this season, head coach Cory Clouston announced on Friday morning.

“It’s definitely an honour. It’s not going to change my role a whole lot. I’m just going to try to go out and lead by example,” said Fisher, who returned to the practice ice on Friday after missing Thursday’s skate with an undisclosed injury.

“He’s a very good leader. He brings what we’re looking for: Work ethic and commitment,” Clouston.

Fisher joins Chris Phillips as alternates to captain Daniel Alfredsson. He was seen as an automatic selection to wear a letter on his jersey, since he is entering his tenth season with the club and has a reputation for being a solid character on and off the ice.

The role of Ottawa’s second alternate captain became available when Dany Heatley was traded to the San Jose Sharks last month.
