Sharks sign Marc-Edouard Vlasic to eight-year contract extension

Daren Millard, Nick Kypreos, Doug MacLean and Elliotte Friedman recap some of the big signings from a busy July 1st.

The San Jose Sharks have signed defenceman Marc-Edouard Vlasic to an eight-year contract extension worth $56-million.

His $7-million annual cap hit, which will go into effect at the start of the 2018-19 season, is now second only to Brent Burns’s $8-million on the Sharks. Vlasic’s cap hit will remain $4.25 million for 2017-18.

Vlasic has spent his entire career with the Sharks after the team selected him 35th overall in the 2005 NHL Draft.

The Sharks made the announcement Saturday. They also signed goalie Martin Jones to a six-year extension.

“We’re thrilled we could get this extension done early and ensure one of the League’s top defensemen will remain in San Jose for the long term,” Sharks GM Doug Wilson said in a press release. “Both Marc-Edouard and Hasso Plattner stepped forward and committed to get this deal done now, and this helps solidify our blueline for years to come. Marc-Edouard has been an integral part of this team, both on and off the ice, and we are excited to have him in San Jose for at least the next eight years.”
