Minnesota Wild fans have spoken and the club has responded with an exciting change at Xcel Energy Center for the upcoming 2016-17 season.
A survey of Wild season ticket holders has led the organization to tab late Minneapolis, Minnesota, native Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” as the team’s new goal song, the club announced Tuesday.
“Our in-arena experience is designed for the fans, so it’s great to be able to show them we take their feedback to heart,” said John Maher, vice president of brand, content and communications. “At the same time, it’s our privilege to celebrate an iconic hometown artist that clearly has had an incredible impact on our community and the world.”
The Wild used the song in Game 6 of its first-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Dallas Stars on April 24 as a tribute to Prince, who passed away on April 21, 2016. Wild fans started an online petition to have the track appointed as the team’s permanent goal song.
Polled season ticket holders voted nearly 2-to-1 in favour of the switch to the former Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit, according to an official Wild release.
“Let’s Go Crazy” was the second single off of Prince’s iconic 1984 album Purple Rain.
The Wild’s first regular season home game is set for October 15 versus the Winnipeg Jets.
