Alejandro Kirk carried the Toronto Blue Jays offensively on Tuesday and nearly made some history.
The veteran catcher finished a triple shy of the cycle as the Blue Jays defeated the Rays 10-5 at Tropicana Field.
"We had a bet, we were all going to take our shirts off if he got it," manager John Schneider joked.
Kirk opened the scoring for the Blue Jays after reaching on a two-out double, coming home on a single from George Springer. He then took Rays starter Nick Martinez deep for a two-run home run in the third inning and added an RBI single in the fourth.
The 27-year-old finished the night with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored.
While Kirk isn't known for his speed on the basepaths, his one career triple came at Tropicana Field back in 2024. Only three players have ever hit for the cycle in Blue Jays history, with the most recent one coming from Cavan Biggio in 2019.
"That goes through your mind, especially early in the game when you have the other three," Kirk said through an interpreter of the possibility of a cycle. "But (the triple) is gonna be the hardest one for me. It's gonna be very hard. But saying that, I already have one in my career."
