The Toronto Blue Jays will look to a rookie pitcher for a lift on Sunday.
Right-hander Spencer Miles will start the Blue Jays' series finale against the Orioles, according to Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling.
Due to a series of injuries to starting pitchers, Miles has been called upon to pitch in a "bulk" role — covering multiple innings after an opener — since May 16. He opened a game himself on May 10, pitching three innings against the Los Angeles Angels.
The 25-year-old was selected by the Blue Jays from the San Francisco Giants with the 10th pick in the 2025 Rule 5 Draft after being left available for selection by all 29 other teams.
Miles had only pitched 14.1 professional innings in the minors over the previous three seasons, missing all of 2023 due to back surgery, then most of 2024 and all of 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
The 33.1 innings he's pitched in the majors with the Blue Jays far exceed his previous professional workload, and he's been successful to boot.
Miles 2.16 ERA leads all rookies with at least 30 innings pitched, and he has 32 strikeouts to nine walks.
The Blue Jays currently have five starters — Dylan Cease, Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer, José Berríos and Cody Ponce — on the injured list.
Miles will aim to carry a beleaguered Blue Jays staff in their series finale against the Orioles on Saturday. Watch the game on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ at noon ET / 9 a.m. PT.
