A trying season for Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola just took another turn.
Nola exited his Saturday start against the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth inning after taking a Jesus Sanchez liner off his right leg. He was later diagnosed with a right knee contusion, and X-rays were negative.
The ball was hit at 105 m.p.h. Nola attempted to walk off the pain and stayed on the mound for some warm-up pitches, but ultimately handed the ball to manager Don Mattingly and was replaced by reliever Brooks Raley.
Sanchez reached on an infield single after the ball ricocheted off Nola's ankle into foul territory but was later picked off by Raley.
Nola wound up going five-plus innings against the Blue Jays, allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.
One of those punchouts represented the 2,000th of Nola's decorated career. However, he's struggled in 23 starts this season, entering Saturday's action holding a career-high 5.55 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 23 starts.
