The Cincinnati Reds are set to cut ties with a recent marquee signing.
Infielder Jeimer Candelario has been designated for assignment, the team announced on Monday.
Candelario signed a three-year, $45 million free-agent contract with the Reds prior to last season, but has failed to make the impact that was expected.
In 134 games with Cincinnati, Candelario has been worth minus-1.6 bWAR, barely breaching the Mendoza line with a .207 batting average while supplying 22 home runs and 66 RBIs.
The 31-year-old has spent time at third base, first base and designated hitter. He was reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of the DFA after recovering from a back injury.
Now, with Candelario off the 40-man roster, the Reds have seven days to trade, release or waive him. Candelario is due $13 million next season and has a 2027 club option worth $18 million.
