Shane Bieber enjoyed a clean day on the mound in his first rehab start of the year.
On Monday, the Toronto Blue Jays righty worked through two scoreless innings while allowing three hits and striking out three in a Florida Complex League start, marking his first bit of in-game action since last year's World Series.
Bieber gave up a leadoff single to Richard Matic and another hit to Queni Pineda two batters later, but finished the inning strong with consecutive swinging strikeouts.
Heading into his appearance in the FCL, the goal was for Bieber to throw two innings, and the team would continue to build up his volume from there. It's unclear when Bieber will make his next appearance.
The 30-year-old right-hander has not pitched in any game action this season after entering training camp with arm fatigue.
Bieber underwent an MRI during the off-season that showed "nothing was wrong, just forearm fatigue," Schneider said. He returned from Tommy John surgery last August and helped the Blue Jays reach the World Series.
The 30-year-old right-hander ended up making seven regular-season starts for Toronto, throwing 40.1 innings while striking out 37 and posting a 3.57 ERA.
With Jose Berrios and Cody Ponce both out for the season, Bieber's eventual return would provide a huge boost to Toronto's depleted starting pitching depth.
