With Anthony Volpe's rehab window coming to a close, the New York Yankees are opting to have the shortstop continue to get up to speed in the minors.
The Yankees returned Volpe from his rehab assignment on Sunday night and optioned the shortstop to triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Volpe was rehabbing after undergoing left shoulder surgery on Oct. 14, and his rehab window ended Sunday, forcing New York to make a call on whether he would join the big-league team.
During his rehab assignment, the 25-year-old slashed .250/.306/.318, with stops in double- and triple-A.
If Volpe is optioned to the minors for at least 20 days, it would delay his free-agent eligibility by a year until after the 2029 season.
Volpe hit 19 homers and stole 18 bases in 153 games for the Yankees in 2025, but only posted a .663 OPS and tied for the American League lead with 19 errors.
New York has sprinted out to the best record in the American League so far this season with 23 wins. José Caballero has handled the bulk of the duties at short in the Bronx and has a .719 OPS and 12 stolen bases through 32 games.
