Memphis Grizzlies centre Zach Edey is facing a misdemeanour reckless driving charge in Indiana after allegedly going over 100 m.p.h. in a 55 m.p.h. zone.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by the Lafayette Journal & Courier, the incident occurred on May 1. An Indiana state trooper pulled him over as he was going northbound on State Road 25 in West Point, Indiana.
After being pulled over, Edey allegedly told the police he was speeding so as to pass another vehicle.
The Toronto, Ont. native is set to appear in court on Monday, June 23, for the reckless driving charge.
Edey was drafted by the Grizzlies ninth overall at the 2024 NBA Draft out of Purdue, a school in West Lafayette, Indiana.
In his rookie season, the seven-foot-four centre averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 21.5 minutes per game. He played in 66 games, starting in 55. He was also named to the NBA's All-Rookie first team.
The 23-year-old will likely miss the start of the 2025-26 season after suffering a sprained left ankle in an off-season workout. He underwent surgery to re-stabilize the ankle. He missed time on four separate occasions over his rookie season with ankle issues.
"After consulting with the Grizzlies and multiple specialists, we decided this is the best approach for Zach long-term as it gets him back to 100 per cent per cent with no limitations," Edey's agent Mark Bartelstein told ESPN.
