Akheem Mesidor picked a perfect time to deliver the most memorable sequence of his college football career.
The Ottawa-born, Miami Hurricanes defensive end had a solo sack on the penultimate play and then finished off Notre Dame by combining with Rueben Bain Jr. for another sack of quarterback CJ Carr in a dramatic 27-24 win on Sunday night.
"We do two-minute drill every day in practice, every single day," Mesidor told reporters. "Honestly, it's the work we put in ... the work me and Rueben put in together, the work I put in individually on my own. For that all to come together, it was special. We just had to take advantage of this moment."
The powerful performance came in a nationally televised showdown in Miami Gardens, Fla., between a pair of top-10 teams — reigning national runner-up Notre Dame was No. 6, while Miami was No. 10.
David Furones of the Sun Sentinel reported 17 NFL teams had scouts on hand for the standalone game, and three had GMs — Brandon Beane of the Buffalo Bills, Joe Schoen of the New York Giants, and Ryan Poles of the Chicago Bears.
Mesidor is the top-ranked prospect for next year's CFL Draft and is trying to climb up NFL boards. His effort Sunday can only help.
With Notre Dame trying to drive down for a potential game-tying field goal in the final minute, Mesidor had a great burst around the edge and got to Carr. The quarterback just got the ball off before hitting the ground but was called for intentional grounding, crediting the sack to the Canadian.
Then, Mesidor and Bain Jr. teamed up to bring down Carr again, and Notre Dame couldn't get another play off before time expired, resulting in a huge roar from the crowd of 66,793.
Mesidor finished with five tackles.
Miami is coming off a 10-3 season, and is looking for its first conference title since 2003.
Mesidor is in his fourth year at Miami after starting his career at West Virginia. He mostly played defensive tackle last year before the team switched him to end this season.
