Capitals sign Henrik Lundqvist to one-year contract

Watch as veteran goalie and now member of the Washington Capitals Henrik Lundqvist discusses how he felt about leaving the New York Rangers organization after spending 15 seasons with the club.

Henrik Lundqvist has found himself a new home as the veteran goaltender is signing with the Washington Capitals on a one-year deal worth $1.5 million.

Lundqvist had the final year of his contract bought out by the New York Rangers last week, ending a 15-year reign in the Big Apple. His previous contract carried an $8.5-million cap hit but he was only owed $5.5 million in total salary for the 2020-21 season.

The 38-year-old put up a 10-12-3 record in 30 games in 2019-20 with a 2.52 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage as he saw his playing time decrease with the emergence of Alexandar Georgiev and Igor Shesterkin.

Lundqvist broke into the NHL with the Rangers in 2005-06 and is the team's all-time leader in several goalie statistics, including games played (887), wins (459), save percentage (.918) and shutouts (64).
