Sidney Crosby is a winner.
So when Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas traded long-time linemate Jake Guentzel Thursday night, seemingly waving the white flag on the season and positioning the team for the future, Crosby was understandably disappointed.
“I wouldn’t say there is,” Crosby said when asked if there's any other point in his career he could compare this season to. “It’s a new experience, for sure.”
Crosby said his comments after his team lost 6-0 to the rival Washington Capitals, a new low in a season in which the Penguins now sit eight points out of a playoff spot with 21 games to go. It will be the first time in Crosby's 19-year career that his Penguins will miss the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.
Dubas has said his goal since taking over management of the Penguins was to return them to being competitive as quickly as possible. Crosby was asked what message the Guentzel trade sends to someone like him who wants to get back into the playoffs as soon as possible.
“I don’t know,” Crosby said. “That’s probably a better question for them.”
