Mason Appleton is returning to the Winnipeg Jets.

The Jets acquired the forward in a trade with the Seattle Kraken late Sunday night.

Appleton had six goals and 11 assists in 49 games with the Kraken after posting 25 points in 56 games last season with the Jets.

Last summer Winnipeg chose to protect seven forwards, three defence and one goalie. But a deep group up front of Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Nikolaj Ehlers, Adam Lowry and Andrew Copp left Appleton exposed, and the Kraken selected him in the Expansion Draft.

The deal became official about 15 hours prior to Monday's trade deadline. The Jets add to their depth up front at a time when they could conceivably trade a forward such as Andrew Copp or Paul Stastny, both set to become unrestricted free agents.

Winnipeg is four points out of a playoff spot after a 6-4 win Sunday night in Chicago.
