The Tampa Bay Lightning took a 2-0 series lead over the New York Islanders Wednesday and they did it without having star centre Brayden Point available for most of the game.
Point, who leads all skaters remaining in the playoffs in scoring, left the game in the second period with an undisclosed injury. He took two shifts in the second period before leaving and only played 8:49 total for the game.
Head coach Jon Cooper didn’t have an update on Point in his post-game press conference but said the team may learn more about the injury on Thursday.
“I don’t have an update on him yet, but we all know the character of that kid and what a competitive gamer he is, so for him not to come back, I know it was tough on him and clearly it was tough on us as well,” Cooper said. “So maybe tomorrow I’ll have a little bit more for you, but he couldn’t come back tonight.”
Point has eight goals and 23 points in 14 playoff games. Game 3 of the series is Friday night at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT on Sportsnet and CBC.
