Garbiel, who appeared in 11 games last season with the San Jose Sharks, had signed a one-year, $750,000 deal with the Maple Leafs this off-season.
Across 49 career NHL appearances split between the Sharks, New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild, the 28-year-old has five points and 55 penalty minutes.
Beyond his on-ice contributions, Gabriel has been recognized for what he brings away from the rink, too.
After emerging as a devoted advocated for the LGBTQ+ community, Gabriel was named a King Clancy award finalist this past season. The honour, given annually to a player “who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community,” eventually went to Pekka Rinne for his work to raise money for cancer research.
