Dennis Gilbert was forced to leave the Battle of Ontario early.
The Ottawa Senators defenceman was slammed into the boards by the Toronto Maple Leafs' Oliver Ekman-Larsson late in the third period as Gilbert tried to make a play on the puck in his own end.
Gilbert's shoulders appeared to crunch into each other as he crumpled to the ice. He remained on the ice for quite a few moments before play was called dead and a trainer was brought on to help him up and off. He skated off the rink with some help from the Senators' support staff. He did not return.
It was the 29-year-old's sixth game of the season, he has recorded one assist.
The Senators acquired Gilbert from the Philadelphia Flyers in a trade on Nov. 17, 2025. It was the second time he's ended up in Ottawa after he landed there as part of the Dylan Cozens trade at the 2024-25 trade deadline.
