VANCOUVER – Sure, come to Canada for a holiday. See your son, watch a couple of hockey games, go home with $100,000.
Canucks centre Teddy Blueger’s mom, Jana, came from Latvia for a family reunion in Vancouver and won the 50/50 draw at Tuesday’s game at Rogers Arena. She pocketed $105,853, according to the team’s website, after the Canucks lost 4-3 in overtime to the St. Louis Blues.
So, at least one Blueger won big.
“Yeah,” Teddy confirmed for reporters on Thursday morning. “I mean, it was a good night for her, for sure.”
Jana Blueger’s windfall victory was spotted by a Reddit user and amplified for Noah Strang, who covers the Canucks for DailyHive.com.
Blueger said his mom and dad, Valentin, met the Canucks at the end of their last road trip in Minnesota, where Teddy’s brother, Robert, coaches high school and minor hockey.
The family, including his grandmother, an uncle and a cousin, then reunited in Vancouver for the Canucks’ six-game homestand and a pre-Christmas holiday.
Teddy said his mom had never purchased 50/50 tickets until Tuesday.
“First time playing, actually,” he said. “She didn't know how it worked; my wife had to explain it to her, and she bought a couple of tickets.”
She can double her winnings tonight when the Canucks play the Florida Panthers.
