Former Montreal Canadiens captain Shea Weber expressed his gratitude to the Habs organization and its fans in a thank you letter Friday afternoon.

The defenceman was dealt to the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday in return for winger Evegenii Dadonov. Weber leaves the franchise after playing five seasons in Montreal and a 2021-22 campaign spent off the ice with injuries leaving his career in serious doubt.

"Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined playing for let alone being named captain of the Montreal Canadiens," Weber said his statement. "Pulling on that legendary jersey every night was one of the greatest honours of my career and it's something I appreciated every chance I got."

Weber added that he considers himself "extremely fortunate" to have played in the NHL and having been a member of a Canadian Original Six team.

"I want to thank my teammates, coaches, trainers, management, the entire organization, Geoff Molson and the Molson family, the Montreal media, and most of all, the fans for embracing me and my family and for making the city feel like a second home," Weber added.

"Montreal will always be in my heart."
