Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu and the club's entire board have resigned from their roles.

Bartomeu made the announcement in a press conference on Tuesday.

A club presidential election is expected to take place at some point in the next 90 days.

The resignations come nearly two months after Lionel Messi publicly criticized the Barcelona board for "not keeping their word" regarding a clause in his contract that could've seen him walk away from the club for free. However, Messi opted to stay this season in order to avoid a legal dispute.

Bartomeu's reign as president began in 2014 after replacing Sandro Rosell, who resigned due to the Neymar transfer scandal. Barcelona won three Spanish league titles, four Copa del Rey titles and one Champions League trophy during Bartomeu's tenure.
