Denis Shapovalov’s run at the 2019 U.S. Open has come to an end after he lost a five-set thriller to France’s Gael Monfils.
The 20-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., lost 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3 to Monfils in the third round on Saturday.
Shapovalov’s loss leaves Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., as the only Canadian still competing in singles at the final major of the year. Andreescu beat former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniaki 6-4, 6-4 earlier on Saturday and will next play American Taylor Townsend in the Round of 16.
