The Winnipeg Jets are looking to host an outdoor game in 2016.

Jets owner True North Sports & Entertainment has had discussions with the NHL to possibly secure the 2016 NHL Heritage Classic at Investors Group Field.

According to the Winnipeg Free Press, the NHL had originally wanted to bring an outdoor game to Winnipeg next year to be played shortly after the Winter Olympics but delays at the new stadium have pushed that date back.

The league wants Investors Group Field to host a number of events and to have any kinks worked out before hosting the Heritage Classic.

For its outdoor games, the NHL prefers seating for more than 40,000 — a capacity that Investors Group Field will be able to hold.

The 2013 Winter Classic played in Ann Arbor, in an Original Six matchup between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Canada has hosted two Heritage Classics, the first being in Edmonton in 2003 and second in Calgary in 2011.
