Eugenie Bouchard falls to Angelique Kerber in straight sets in Rio

Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard was defeated in straight sets and eliminated in singles competition at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

After cruising in her Olympic debut, Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard couldn’t get going in her match Monday afternoon and is out of the Olympic singles competition.

Bouchard fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to Germany’s Angelique Kerber, the world’s No. 2 player, in Round 2 of the women’s tennis tournament at Rio 2016.

She broke Kerber’s serve early in the first set, which helped her get out to a 4-1 lead, but Kerber won the next five games to take the first set.

The 22-year-old Westmount, Que., native breezed past Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-3 in her opening match of the event and is still alive in doubles after winning her first-roundmatch, along with Gabriela Dabrowski.

Canada’s Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil will play men’s doubles later on Monday.
