The Columbus Blue Jackets and forward Cam Atkinson have agreed to a seven-year, $41.25 million contract extension.

The deal carries a cap hit of $5.89 million per season.

“Cam Atkinson has played an integral role in the growth of our team over the past four seasons and we couldn’t be happier that he will remain a Columbus Blue Jacket for many years to come,” Blue Jackets GM Jarmor Kekalainen said. “He has improved every year he’s been here and become a player our team can use in all situations. We believe his best years are still in front of him.”

Atkinson, 28, was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He’s played his entire seven-year career in Columbus where he has 125 goals and 233 points in 397 games. His goal totals have increased every season of his career, including a career-high 35 last year.
