We’ve seen players score on their own net in hockey before but this one in the KHL over the weekend is a doozy.
Omsk Avangard scored one of the flukiest own goals you’ll see during a game against Astana Barys on Sunday.
Omsk maintained control of the puck during a delayed Astana penalty midway through the third period of a game they were leading 3-2. Forward Mikhail Fisenko circled the net and attempted a cross-ice pass to defenceman Yegor Martynov but the puck deflected off Andrei Stas’s skate in the slot and the puck glided more than 150 feet down the ice until it crossed the goal line.
Former NHLer Dustin Boyd, a 2004 third-round pick of the Calgary Flames who has played in the KHL since 2011, was credited with the goal for Astana.
Omsk ended up winning the game by a final score of 5-3, so the players involved could laugh about it after the fact.
