WASHINGTON — Sandy Alcantara pitched seven steady innings and the Miami Marlins hit three home runs, snapping their five-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Monday night.
After yielding 14 runs over his previous two starts, Alcantara (4-4) allowed three runs and seven hits this time. He struck out five without a walk.
The Marlins trailed 3-1 before scoring three runs in the sixth. After pinch-hitter Heriberto Hernández tied it with a two-run homer, Miami went ahead on Connor Norby’s RBI double off Richard Lovelady (2-3). Liam Hicks and Kyle Stowers added home runs for the Marlins in the ninth.
Jacob Young went deep for Washington.
Otto Lopez had three hits and a walk for Miami, raising his major league-leading batting average to .333.
TIGERS 10, RAYS 9
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Dillon Dingler hit two of Detroit’s season-high five homers, Riley Greene was a triple shy of the cycle and the Tigers stopped a four-game skid by holding off Tampa Bay.
Dingler had four hits and drove in four runs. Kerry Carpenter also went deep and finished with three hits and two RBIs. Greene was 3 for 4 with a walk and three RBIs.
That trio combined to hit three consecutive homers in the third inning. The previous time Detroit launched three straight homers was Aug. 8, 2020, when Miguel Cabrera, C.J. Cron and Jeimer Candelario connected at Pittsburgh.
Hao-Yu Lee also homered for the Tigers (23-38), who avoided falling 17 games under .500. The most games under .500 for a team rebounding to make the playoffs was 16 by the 1914 Boston Braves, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
ROYALS 9, REDS 2
CINCINNATI — Lane Thomas hit a grand slam in the first inning and Luinder Avila pitched a career-high five innings as Kansas City snapped a six-game skid with a win over Cincinnati.
Kansas City (23-37) won for just the fourth time in 20 games.
Avila (1-2) made his second career start and allowed one run on two hits with four walks and a career-high five strikeouts on 86 pitches, also a career high. Avila is replacing left-hander Kris Bubic, who is sidelined with arm issues.
Jac Caglianone hit a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, in the fifth and Michael Massey added a solo homer in the seventh, both off Reds lefty Brandon Leibrandt.
Leibrandt gave the Reds’ injury-riddled bullpen a boost by pitching six innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits.
TWINS 9, WHITE SOX 6
MINNEAPOLIS — Tristan Gray hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and Minnesota added four more runs in the fifth on the way to a win over Chicago.
The Twins snapped a five-game losing streak. The White Sox had their five-game winning streak halted.
Gray’s 384-foot shot over the wall in right field — his second career grand slam and first since the Twins’ home opener on April 3 — gave Minnesota a 5-1 lead it never surrendered.
Trevor Larnach hit an RBI single in the first to get the Twins on the board. Austin Martin and Victor Caratini added one-run singles in the fifth before Luke Keaschall and Gray each drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to stretch Minnesota’s lead to 9-4.
Joe Ryan (4-3) allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings with nine strike outs. Travis Adams allowed two runs in the ninth before closing out the win.
BREWERS 16, GIANTS 2
MILWAUKEE — Brice Turang ended an 0-for-21 slump by going 2 for 2 with a double and triple in Milwaukee's blowout of San Francisco.
Turang also had a pair of walks to reach on all four of his plate appearances. He doubled in the first inning and hit a two-run triple off the center-field wall in the second.
Milwaukee’s 16 runs and 18 hits were season highs, though the Brewers had no homers. The Brewers walked 11 times to match a season high.
Christian Yelich and David Hamilton each went 3 for 5 with three runs for the Brewers. Luis Rengifo also scored three runs, and Yelich had two RBIs. Jackson Chourio was 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
The Brewers have won six of seven. The Giants have lost six of seven.
RANGERS 2, CARDINALS 1
ST. LOUIS — Jacob deGrom tossed five scoreless innings to earn his 100th career win and Ezequiel Duran had three hits as Texas beat St. Louis.
A two-time NL Cy Young Award winner, the 37-year-old deGrom (4-4) allowed four hits and struck out eight in his fourth attempt at the milestone victory. The right-hander went 1-3 with a 5.72 ERA in five May starts and has not won this season when allowing multiple runs.
Jacob Latz pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save to help the Rangers win their fourth straight game.
Michael McGreevy (3-5) gave up two runs on five hits and two walks in six innings after yielding eight runs in nine innings over his previous two starts.
DIAMONDBACKS 4, DODGERS 1
PHOENIX — Ketel Marte launched a two-run homer, Nolan Arenado and rookie Tommy Troy hit solo shots and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night.
The Dodgers lost for just the fourth time in 18 games. Shohei Ohtani had a three-hit night and has 10 hits over his last five games.
Arenado gave the D-backs a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning, hammering his eighth homer of the season to left-center. Marte tacked on his two-out, no-doubt homer in the eighth to give Arizona some welcome insurance.
It was Marte's 10th longball of the year. Paul Sewald worked the ninth for his 15th save in 16 opportunities after Taylor Clarke (2-1) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win.
MARINERS 3, METS 2 (10 INNINGS)
SEATTLE — Cole Young hit a game-winning single in the 10th inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the New York Mets 3-2 on Monday night for their season-high seventh straight victory.
The walk-off win was Seattle’s third in four games as the Mariners (32-29) improved to a season-best three games over .500.
New York mustered only two hits and had its four-game winning streak snapped. The Mets dropped to 7-5 in extra-inning games, the most any major league team has played this season.
With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Young flared a single to left field off reliever A.J. Minter (0-1). That scored Randy Arozarena, who started the inning as the automatic runner at second base and stole third as Patrick Wisdom struck out.
Gabe Speier (1-2) struck out two in a perfect inning for the win, including Juan Soto leading off.
ROCKIES 9, ANGELS 8
ANAHEIM, Calif. — TJ Rumfield hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth inning and the Colorado Rockies used a five-run eighth to rally past the Los Angeles Angels 9-8 on Monday night.
Hunter Goodman put Colorado ahead 8-6 with a three-run homer in the eighth. Jake McCarthy homered earlier for the Rockies, who have won more games this season (23) than they did before the All-Star break last year.
Jorge Soler's two-run triple for the Angels tied it 8-all in the bottom of the eighth.
McCarthy doubled in the ninth to move Kyle Karros to third before Rumfield drove him home with a sac fly to right field for a 9-8 lead. McCarthy finished 2 for 4 at the plate, including a solo homer in the third for a 2-0 lead.
