The Kansas City Royals have dominated the American League all-star vote and Don Cherry is not happy about it.
The hockey icon let the world know on his Coach’s Corner segment during Saturday’s Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, issuing a rallying cry for Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson.
“We have an injustice being done in baseball,” Cherry said.
According to the latest voting results, released by MLB last Monday, Donaldson trails Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas by about 1.7 million votes. The Royals, who are the reigning AL champs, currently have a total of seven players in line to start the Midsummer Classic at their respective positions.
“Josh Donaldson, without a doubt, is the best third baseman in the world,” said Cherry. “The guy there in Kansas City can’t carry (Donaldson’s) glove. He’s got four million votes. You know why? The people of Kansas City voted, voted, voted.”
Donaldson, acquired in the off-season from Oakland, leads AL third baseman in doubles (15), home runs (17), RBIs (45), hits (79) and OPS (.948).
Moustakas, who’s hit five home runs to go along with 20 RBIs, trails the Blue Jays slugger in almost all offensive categories. However, entering Sunday, he did have a slight advantage in batting average (.318 to Donaldson’s .316) and on-base percentage (.369 to .368).
Cherry, accompanied by broadcaster Ron MacLean, held up a sign with Blue Jays’ voting details and urged Canadian fans to do their part.
“We cannot look bad in Canada,” he said.
