Cubs recall veteran closer Craig Kimbrel from triple-A

The Chicago Cubs have recalled veteran closer Craig Kimbrel from triple-A Iowa.

Right-hander Tony Barnette was optioned to triple-A in a corresponding move.

Kimbrel, 31, sat out the first two months of the season as a free agent before signing with the Cubs on June 5. The seven-time all-star will be paid $10 million this season and $16 million in 2020 and 2021, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Kimbrel has 333 saves over nine seasons with the Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox. Last season with the Red Sox he had a 2.74 ERA, 96 strikeouts and 42 saves to help bring another World Series title to Boston.
