SAN DIEGO — Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Ramon Ortiz left Sunday’s game against San Diego in tears after appearing to injure his right elbow.
After a throwing a 1-1 pitch to Padres third baseman Chase Headley with no outs in the third inning, the 40-year-old Ortiz immediately grabbed the elbow and walked off the mound. He slammed his glove to the ground, crouched down and began wiping away tears in an emotional display.
With his teammates and manager John Gibbons surrounding him, Ortiz pointed to his elbow as the team’s trainer came out to assess the situation.
Jays reliever Brad Lincoln came in and finished a clean third inning.
Ortiz, who has played in 303 career games with eight different teams over 12 major league seasons, was called up from the minors on Saturday to help Toronto’s depleted pitching staff after starter Brandon Morrow was put on the 15-day disabled list.
Coming into Sunday, he had appeared in six games — four starts — for the Jays this season, compiling a 1-2 record with a 5.01 earned-run average.
