The AL East race has been compelling to this point in the season, but it could reach another level in the next five weeks. The way things are going, the drama could extend to the final weekend of the season.
The Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox, who are now tied atop the division, are schedule to finish the regular season with a series at Fenway Park. Should they remain tied after those three games, the teams would then play a one-game playoff with the division title at stake.
“Imagine if Rogers Centre is the site of a one-game playoff and David Price is the starter for the Boston Red Sox,” Dan Shulman told Arden Zwelling and Ben Nicholson-Smith on At the Letters. “It could be really exciting.”

Meanwhile, the Orioles remain just one game back in the AL East, entering play Thursday. Despite a struggling starting rotation that recently lost Chris Tillman to the 15-day disabled list, they can’t be ruled out, either.
“I’ve been amazed that the Orioles have been able to stay in it as long as they have with the starting pitching they have,” Shulman said. “I just think that catches up to you eventually and amazingly enough it hasn’t really.”
