Cincinnati Reds star Joey Votto may be enjoying the best season of his already-impressive MLB career.
The Toronto native is in the midst a rare offensive streak and has the chance to match history Wednesday night against the Chicago Cubs.
Despite Votto’s stellar play, the Reds are among baseball’s worst teams with a 50-70 record ahead of Wednesday’s action. According to Cincinnati Enquirer reporter C. Trent Rosecrans, however, a change of scenery for Votto this winter seems unlikely.
“I don’t see a match because it’s going to take: A) the right team that has that need and desire, and B) a place where Joey Votto wants to go,” Rosecrans said on The Jeff Blair Show on Wednesday. “Joey is very comfortable in Cincinnati; he likes living here, he likes being here and he’s not a guy who is searching for the attention to be the face of baseball or anything. That’s just not Joey.”
Votto has $157 million remaining on his contract after 2017 and a full no-trade clause.
“I don’t see him in New York or Boston. The one place I could see him is with the Dodgers, except they’re okay at first base for a long time. And so I just don’t see a fit,” Rosecrans told Jeff Blair and Sheri Forde on Sportsnet 590 The FAN. “When there was those talks with the Blue Jays, that might have been the only one, but also, again, for a guy who doesn’t want to be the face of a franchise or the face of baseball, he would be the face of the sport in the entire country if he were with the Blue Jays … I would assume that he might not want to do that.”
