Bautista returns as Blue Jays face Tigers

Jose Bautista returns to the starting lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers after missing the Toronto Blue Jays’ series against the Boston Red Sox with a sore ankle. Bautista will be the designated hitter while Adam Lind sits.

Bautista injured his right ankle while playing against the Cleveland Indians last week, and though he was a candidate to pinch hit against the Red Sox, he didn’t appear in the weekend series. Instead, he rested and John Gibbons managed with a short bench.

Tigers DH Victor Martinez cut his right thumb on the bat rack and required eight stitches. The switch hitter will not play in Tuesday’s opener.

Brandon Morrow faces Anibal Sanchez, as the Blue Jays look to start their first road trip of the season with a win. The 3-3 Tigers are hoping for another strong start from Sanchez, who pitched five scoreless innings in his season debut.

Morrow faced the Indians in his first start of the season, striking out eight and walking two in six innings of work. Morrow threw 100 pitches, averaging more than 95 m.p.h. with his fastball, in a game the Blue Jays ultimately lost 3-2.

The Tigers won four of six games against the Blue Jays in 2012.
